Emotional Symptom Regulation for FND and Biopsychosocial Conditions
The Emotional Symptom Regulation Model (ESRM) is a structured, data informed framework that helps clinicians understand how emotions, expectations and threat processing shape the experience of symptoms in Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) and related biopsychosocial conditions.
This training has been developed in collaboration between NeuroLog and ReAttach Academy, and is delivered online for mental health and healthcare professionals who want to bring emotional patterning and real world data into everyday clinical practice.
The ESRM training is designed as postgraduate level CPD for professionals who work with complex, medically unexplained or biopsychosocial presentations.
Mental health professionals working with complex presentations
Medical specialists in neurology and mental health
Dutch healthcare professionals with specialized registrations
Mental health and neurology nursing professionals
Working with FND and persistent physical symptoms
Mental health workers and case managers
Working with emotion-driven symptom patterns
You should already have a relevant professional qualification and a caseload where you encounter FND, functional symptoms, somatic symptom disorders or other complex biopsychosocial problems.
By the end of the ESRM pathway, participants will be able to master these essential competencies:
Explain FND and related conditions using an integrated biopsychosocial and emotion informed model, moving away from mind-body dualism.
Understand how emotional states, expectations and threat responses shape symptom onset, severity and fluctuation.
Work with seven emotional symptom triads to recognise recurrent patterns such as overload, social isolation, fear-based escalation and shame-based withdrawal.
Use the Symptom Amplification Model to map how attention, meaning, affect and bodily sensations amplify each other over time.
Apply the idea of an "emotional thermostat" to help patients adjust their emotional load and symptom reactivity in daily life.
Integrate real world data from the NeuroLog app, including symptom logs, emotional clusters and trigger patterns, into formulation and treatment planning.
Communicate emotional insights to patients in a way that is validating, non-blaming and collaborative.
Select and adapt interventions from CBT, DBT, ACT, polyvagal and ReAttach approaches as practical "circuit breakers" within ESRM and SAM formulations.
These competencies will enable you to provide more effective, compassionate care while building stronger therapeutic relationships with your patients experiencing FND and related conditions.
The ESRM training is organised in two comprehensive levels designed to build your expertise progressively.
Introduction to Emotion Informed Clinical Practice
This level gives a clear conceptual foundation and is suitable for clinicians who want to understand ESRM and start using it in assessment, communication and basic intervention planning.

NVvPO (12 points), LVPOH-GGZ Category B
Throughout the training, NeuroLog is used as a live example of how daily symptom logs, emotional entries, and the Symptom Amplification Model (SAM) can reveal patterns and strengthen treatment planning.
The ESRM training sits inside the accredited ecosystem of ReAttach Academy and the ReAttach Therapy International Foundation.
This training has been developed in collaboration between NeuroLog and ReAttach Academy, bringing together cutting-edge technology and established clinical expertise.
